| Andrew J. Davis was born in Manayunk, now a part of Philadelphia.
He was the son of George Washington Davis, a shop-keeper who was active
in community affairs serving as a Director of Manayunk from 1848 - 1850.
Andrew graduated from Philadelphia High School. As a young man he clerked
in a Wilkes-Barre store.
The way to wealth opened-up when he entered the coal business as an operator. He first operated the Grand Tunnel Mine at Avondale, Pennsylvania. He associated with Judge Asa Packer, president of Lehigh Valley Railroad, with whose assistance he purchased "Warrior Run Mine" near Glen Summit, PA. and operated it successfully for nearly forty years. At retirement, he sold the property to the Lehigh Valley Coal Company for a million dollars. |
