ose was born March 1876 in Versailles, Missouri. Her father, John Henry
Pennebaker died in 1878.
In the 1880's, Rose's mother, Nancy, moved the family, including her older brother Edwin, to booming Denver, Colorado. In 1890, Rose was living with her mother at 630 East 33rd Avenue and working as a bookkeeper for the firm of C.A. Nast. In 1897, Charles Ysla Grimes was made rector of Trinity Memorial Episcopal Church where he met Rose. They wed October 31, 1900. Their first child, Margaret, was born January 21, 1902 and Charles was called to the Missionary District of Olympia Washington on June 16, 1902. In Tacoma Washington, the couple had two more children and played a busy prominent role in the growing city. Charles passed away in March 1920. For about 12 years following the death of her husband Mrs. Grimes was employed at the Pierce county courthouse as Superior court clerk, first in the court of Judge W. D. Askren and later with Judge Fred G. Remann. Rose passed August 26, 1948 while living with her daughter Peggy Kelley in Minnesota and was buried with Reverend Grimes at Tacoma. |
