Techs love their work.  Most of them take it quite seriously, despite the projectile rubber bands and odd action figures you see in their work areas.

It's easy to squelch this natural enjoyment by forcing an them to be involved in business office politics.  Get those issues off their shoulders.  Work with them to define boundaries and expectations.  

And share a good joke on occasion.
