Graded Classes of 74 - 75 Newsletters 2000

2/11/2000

Friends,

A quick note to provide you an e-mail update (already posted on the web site) for Cecily Nagel. This is her new home e-mail address, replacing the office address she used previously, so you can all bombard her with mail and photos:

CecilyN@msn.com

Cecily has news that Barbie Jackson Pulford apparently has moved to Houston. That explains why her Venezuelan e-mail address no longer works. Barbie and Pat moved recently from Valencia, Venezuela. Cecily will provide their updated address and we'll circulate it to all.

There are a number of alums in Houston, Carla Oden (and all of her sibling), Molly Manzo, Danny Herbert and now, apparently, Barbie. Enough to get together for a feijoada every few months.

Thanks Cecily.

Hugs to all,

Dennis and Esther Rodrigues

A wonderful bio received from Sharon Sauermilch Wagner. Click here http://home.netcom.com/~dennis57/Photos.html to see it. We add new arrivals to the bottom of the page, so just scroll down and you will see Sharon's bio.

Sharon has written to Mark Hobbs, and to the University of Texas alumni office re: Teresa Page and Carol Gloyna. Ginny Witter is trying to obtain contact information for Ann and Jan Bunge through their older brother Walter. Will e-mail any new contact information out as we receive it. Thanks Sharon and Ginny.

Billy Freeland wrote late last year and provided his and his brother Charles' e-mail addresses. I realized today that I had not added them to the web site previously. Apologies Billy and Charles. Billy is looking for Elizabeth Barry. Any leads?

Take care all,

Dennis

2/16/2000

Dear Turma,

Carla Oden Tenison has provided Carol Gloyna Prince's snail mail and phone information, (another one in Houston, TX) which is now posted on the class of 75 lost and found page.

David Scheeres is looking for Fernando Gouvea. Fernando contacted David while in college, and was in mathematics at U. of Sao Paulo, but David hasn't heard anything since. Any ideas?

Lisle (Liz) Merriman Benson, who attended Graded for a semester in 7th grade, found us through the Graded web site. She is in Akron OH and has a sister and brother in law who have applied to teach at Graded. Liz has been added to the page of the found for the class of 74 and her e-mail address is: heymoe@nacs.net

Barbie Jackson Pulford wrote and confirmed her move to Houston and provided new snail and e-mail addresses. There are two e-mail's, at pulf@compaq.net and barbpulf@hotmail.com.

Gordon Lepingwell has replied and confirmed his e-mail address at: Glepingwel@aol.com

We've added links on the Reunion home page to Reunion pages for Graded classes of 66 - 73, the American School in Campinas and the American School in Rio. The Graded 66 - 73 site includes some e-mail addresses which may be for older sibling of some of our lost. Please scan the list and see if there is someone there who can help you find one of our 'lost' that you would particularly like to reconnect with.

All for now.

All the best,

Dennis

2/20/2000

Dear Friends,

I've decided to take the lead of the Graded classes of 66 - 73 web page and have created a site for people to post standing requests of lost friends they would like to find. I've seeded it with Suzanne Boynton's letter.

So you get into the swing of things, check out the web page that has served as our inspiration:

http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pointe/1303/find.html

Our page is actually at the bottom of our opening page to make it easy to get to. When you access our web page at:

http://pweb.netcom.com/~dennis57

just scroll down to the bottom and check out who is trying to find who.

There have been many requests over the last few months from people who have contacted us to find other people. Up to now there has not been a central place to post such requests. The requests may be a little lost themselves, mixed in with people's bios. Could those of you who have not yet found your favorite lost ones, write to us again, listing your requests so that we can post them in this new section?

Thanks a million and have a great week.

Um big abraco,

Dennis & Esther

Dear folks,

Howard Richmond has provided a good bio, which is posted on the Class of 75 Photos and Pictures page. Suzanne Boynton, older sister of Shelly (75) wrote the letter [in the 'Find a Lost Friend' Section of the site]. She's looking for Bill Miller, (75) who left Graded in '73.

Please let us know if you find him or anyone else from the classes of 74 and 75.

Hope you've all had a great weekend.

Dennis

Gregg thanks for the e-mail address. Mike, we'll delighted you have your own e-mail address that we can pester you at.

To the rest of you, I promise this is the last one tonight and that I'll try to be more concise in future weekends.

Take care to all,

Dennis

Dear Growing List of Graded Alum Friends,

This week in the news:

1. Felix Lahens supplied a new e-mail address and work contact information at the Royal Bank here in Miami. Felix's information is as follows (new e-mail address is listed on the web site, for future reference):

2. Ann Bunge Compton contacted us earlier this evening and supplied the following quick note. We've asked her for a more extensive bio and current photo for the web site. For those who would like to contact her right away here is the news and the e-mail address:

"I'm living in Katy, TX, which is a suburb of Houston. I work at Memorial-Herman SW as a RN. I have a blended family, six kids 3 of which I gave birth to. My sisters Jill, and Jan, and my brother Walt all live near Houston."

e-mail: annfromkaty@webtv.net

3. Suzanne Boynton McCoy (Shelly's big sister from the class of '73) wrote a wonderful, complete bio that we've used to inaugurate a new page on the web site, dedicated to members of other classes who contact us. We don't plan to methodically 'find' all of the hundreds of Graded alum's from other classes. We will, however, acknowledge and post notes from those who do find us. Many of you have siblings who are also alums and may enjoy contributing their news to the site. Let them know if you think they may be interested.

Suzanne's bio can be found by going to the web site at http://pweb.netcom.com/~dennis57 and clicking on the "Other Classes'' link in the lower left corner in the Photos and Pictures section. We've also posted a note from Rolf Hak ('77) that we received several months back. We'll gradually populate this page with some older notes and will use it to record messages from others who contact us from other classes from this point on.

That's it for now.

Keep well, and hug your spouse/significant other/kids/pets (or all of them) tomorrow morning, to start out your week with a clear sense of what is really important in life.

Dennis & Esther

3/12/2000

Dear friends,

1. In the small world department, Kathy Liao Vilhena and I found each other at a business meeting on March 6. She's lived in Miami since 1991 with her husband Sergio and 4 kids. Her home e-mail address is: kvilhena@aol.com. Be sure to send her greetings.

2. Helen McKie Creamore (75), who left Graded in 1972, is alive and well and living in Canada. Her e-mail address is: kenhelencreamore@home.com. Those that remember Helen, please drop her a note.

3. Lynette Botsford wrote to tell that she is moving from NJ to Miami soon. We'll have a Miami mini-Reunion to welcome her here. We'll publicize her new contact information when she is settled in.

4. Tica Stanton ('76) has provided a bio for the new Other Classes page. Check it out at

http://home.netcom.com/~dennis57/Other%20classes.html

I'll paste in a really neat note we received this week from Tica (unfortunately not for the Portuguese-challenged among us. . . . sorry) telling about linking up (through Jan's big sister Ann Bunge Compton) with Jan Bunge (76) who was born in the same hospital in Santos, within 16 hours of Tica and how the Stanton's and Bunge's were such tremendously good friends.

"Gracas a voce, sua familia, e o(s) Web page(s), eu entrei
em contato com Ann (Bunge) Compton via email e ela vai me mandar o
endereco da Jan, '76.

Jan e eu nascemos no mesmo hospital em Santos. Eu nasci 11 de agosto as
13 horas e, 16 horas depois, Jan nasceu, dia 12 as 7 da manha. Sempre
passamos nossos anniversarios juntos e nossos pais tambem eram grandes
amigos. Era como tivessimos duas maes e dois pais. Ate hoje Jan e Ann
aparecem com frequencia nos meus sonhos. Elas realmente fazem parte de
quem sou. OBRIGADA!!! Esse trabalho que voces estam fazendo realmente
tras (traz?) felicidade a muitas pessoas.

Beijo -

Tica"

5. Rick Stotler's Graded web site has a new feature, a sign-in for Graded alums who wish to submit their e-mail addresses for subsequent posting on that site. Those that would like to maximize their exposure to other Graded alums may want to submit e-mail addresses to Rick at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pointe/1303/email.html

6. For the weekly gifty, check out this site. Make the flock of butterflies fly by moving the mouse around the screen after the page has fully loaded. What will they think of next?

http://home.columbus.rr.com/cheztonner/butterflies.html

Take care all,

Dennis & Esther Rodrigues

3/19/2000

Dear Friends,

1. Matt Lund has a new e-mail address at: matthew.lund@acxiom.com

2. Patricia Figueiredo (class of 76), Fernanda Figueiredo's sister, (pr.wehrle@originet.com.br) is looking for Erik Berg ('75). The whitepages.com web site lists five Erik Berg's in California, where he lived about 10 years ago, when Patricia last had contact with him. Does anyone have clues on how to narrow down which Erik Berg is the one who went to Graded?

3. Nancy Boltz's ('75) sister Lauren wrote and provided contact information for herself (Lauren.B.Koval@acwilm.com) and for Nancy, now Nancy Boltz McClure. Nancy's e-mail is: mkonkadonk@cs.com. Lauren and Nancy both live in Delaware. We're expecting a bio and photo from Nancy to add to the site. The rate of 'finding' people continues at about one a week. This is very exciting. Lauren actually graduated from the American school in Salvador, the Escola Panamericana da Bahia. We've added a link on our web site (on the initial page) to the unofficial web site for the alums of the Salvador school. Anyone who may have attended the school in Salvador at some point may be interested. The site url is: http://members.tripod.com/~arjnoro/index-3.html. The site is really creatively set up. Those who enjoy graphic arts will appreciate it.

4. Massimo de Rossi sent one of the most amusing notes we've received in a long time. He copied several of you on it, but to the majority who have not seen it, here goes:

Following are actual answers to a 6th grade history test:

1. Ancient Egypt was inhabited by mummies and they all wrote in hydraulics. They lived in the Sarah Dessert. The climate of the Sarah is such that the inhabitants have to live elsewhere.

2. Moses led the Hebrew slaves to the Red Sea, where they made unleavened bread, which is bread made without any ingredients. Moses went up on Mount Cyanide to get the ten commandments. He died before he ever reached Canada.

3. Solomom had three hundred wives and seven hundred porcupines.

4. The Greeks were a highly sculptured people, and without them we wouldn't have history The Greeks also had myths. A myth is a female moth.

5. Socrates was a famous Greek teacher who went around giving people advice. They killed him. Socrates died from an overdose of wedlock. After his death, his career suffered a dramatic decline.

6. In the Olympic games, Greeks ran races, jumped, hurled biscuits, and threw the java.

7. Julius Caesar extinguished himself on the battlefields of Gaul. The Ides of March murdered him because they thought he was going to be made king. Dying, he gasped out: "Tee hee, Brutus."

8. Joan of Arc was burnt to a steak and was canonized by Bernard Shaw.

9. The nineteenth century was a time of a great many thoughts and inventions. People stopped reproducing by hand and started reproducing by machine. The invention of the steamboat caused a network of rivers to spring up. Cyrus McCormick invented the McCormick raper, which did the work of a hundred men. Louis Pasteur discovered a cure for rabbis. Charles Darwin was a naturalist who wrote the Organ of the Species. Madman Curie discovered radio. And Karl Marx became one of the Marx Brothers.

10. It was an age of great inventions and discoveries. Gutenberg invented removable type and the Bible. Another important invention was the circulation of blood. Sir Walter Raleigh is a historical figure becaus he invented cigarettes and started smoking. Sir Fransis Drake Circumsized the world with a 100-foot clipper.

11. The greatest writer of the Renaissance was William Shakespeare. He was born in the year 1564, supposedly on his birthday. He never made much money and is famous only because of his plays. He wrote tragedies, comedies, and hysterectomies, all in Islamic pentameter. Romeo and Juliet are an example of a heroic couple.

12. Writing at the same time as Shakespeare was Miguel Cervantes. He wrote Donkey Hote. The next great author was John Milton. Milton wrote Paradise Lost. Then his wife died and he wrote Paradise Regained.

13. Delegates from the original 13 states formed the Contented Congress. Thomas Jefferson, a Virgin, and Benjamin Franklin were two singers of the Declaration of Independence. Franklin discovered electricity by rubbing two cats backwards and declared, "A horse divided against itself cannot stand." Franklin died in 1790 and is still dead.

14. Abraham Lincoln became America's greatest Precedent. Lincoln's mother died in infancy, and he was born in a log cabin which he built with his own hands. Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves by signing the Emasculation Proclamation. On the night of April 14, 1865, Lincoln went to the theater and got shot in his seat by one of the actors in a moving picture show. They believe the assinator was John Wilkes Booth, a supposingly insane actor. This ruined Booth's career.

15. Johann Bach wrote a great many musical compositions and had a large number of children. In between he practiced on an old spinster which he kept up in his attic. Bach died from 1750 to the present. Bach was the most famous composer in the world and so was Handel. Handel was half German half Italian and half English. He was very large.

16. Beethoven wrote music even though he was deaf. He was so deaf he wrote loud music. He took long walks in the forest even when everyone was calling for him. Beethoven expired in 1827 and later died for this.

----------------

Have a great week. Be good correspondents with each other. You never can tell just how special a note from a special friend from so far back may be to someone who is feeling down. Write frequently and often to each other.

3/26/2000

Dear Folks,

An interesting week that included quite a lot of contact with Rick Conn's sister Kim (Conn Dunn) who is part of a committee working on holding a Class of 77 Reunion in 2002. The committee already has e-mail addresses for 53 people, some of whom are sibling of members of our two classes. We're temporarily hosting an initial web page for that group, which includes all of their 'found' with e-mail addresses, at:

http://home.netcom.com/~dennis57/Class_of_77.html

Its interesting to scan through the list and see who might help you find someone you would like to contact. For example, Sally Bogott's younger sister Katie is on the list and we've written to her for contact information for Sally.

We also found contact information for Ivo Almuli, Sofia's younger brother, wrote to him in NY and from him have an e-mail address for Sofia. When we hear back from Sofia we'll publish her address.

Sofia counts as our 'found' for the week, so we're keeping up the rate of one found a week.

We also contacted Beth Neal Boyce (Pegi Neal's younger sister, married to Craig Boyce) and have current snail mail info for Pegi now on the site.

Good night and keep well,

Dennis & Esther

4/4/2000

Dear Folks,

1. Phil Pyne's mother Ginny wrote to us and provided contact information for the parents of several of our lost classmates. We've written to these parents and hope to establish contact with: John Gould, Julie Reddan, Julie Stevens, Rick and David Woodford and Kim Harper. Thanks so much Ginny.

2. Sofia Almuli wrote back. Kathy Liao and Sofia have reconnected and Sofia plans to visit Kathy in Miami next weekend. Sofia's e-mail address is: sindesert@aol.com.

3. Steve Gay took some fascinating pictures while he was here for the Reunion. Steve printed the pictures out and sent them to us as post cards. I've scanned and attached them. As a quiz, I'd like to challenge each of you to write identifying where and when the photos were taken.

4. Sally Bogott is found. Her note just came in. An excerpt:

"My sister Katie Bogott Ohlinger forwarded an email to me that said that you were looking for me. I opened the web site and I was amazed. I spent 3 hours yesterday going over every detail. What a wonderful job you have both done. I wish that I had known of the reunion because I would have been there in a heartbeat. You both deserve great praise for all the work you have done. I can't tell you how much fun I had on the web site.
I am now Sally Bogott Noyes. My email address is Noyes2@rcn.com.
I promise a bio and pictures soon. Please let me know if any reunions are planned in the future.
Thanks so much,
Sally Bogott Noyes

Take care and stay in touch,

Dennis & Esther

4/9/2000

A bounteous week. We found THREE of our lost.

1. The first is Kim Harper Cordell ('75) who lives in Perry, OH. See Kim's entry at:

http://home.netcom.com/~dennis57/Photos.html

Kim is the first of the found contacted through the list of Alum parents that Phil Pyne's Mom, Ginny, sent us last week.

2. The second is Julie Stevens Zergott, also located through Mrs. Pyne. Julie lives in North Olmsted, Ohio. Julie's entry is also at

http://home.netcom.com/~dennis57/Photos.html

3. The third is Bobby Sainz (RDSainz@UCDavis.Edu) is a professor at UC Davis. We found his brother Gus [Gustavo Armando Sainz y Gonsalez - Graded 71] at a Boy Scout meeting here in Miami a few weeks back. Gus has lived in Miami for the last 15 years. His home is a couple of miles from ours.

Bobby so far has written the following:

I was lost, and now I am found!

We've written to Bobby asking for a slightly more comprehensive bio.

4. Patty Udler Zeitz (class of 76) e-mail: zeegirls@kvnet.org wrote in our Discussion Forum a few weeks ago. She's been in touch with Donna Hedin ('75, I believe). Patty, can you send us Donna's contact information?

5. Last on the Alum front, a great note of a mini-reunion in SP, recently, from Roberto Alegre:

Dear Friends !

I would like to share some good news with you...

Gregg Farrar was in Brazil two weeks ago and we had lunch together .

I have not seen him since 10th grade but fortunately it seemed that we were together just a few months ago. I was very glad to learn how how he was doing and about his family, his work and his future plans ....

I am attaching a recent photo of my family taken during Carnaval at Paruqe do Caracol in Rio Grande do Sul and a photo of Gregg, Bill and myself taken during our lunch in SP.

I just received an email from Bill ( our class social director ) informing that Fernanda will be in Brazil next week. Great opportunity to see her again [for the first time] since July 1974 !

Um Forte Abraço

Roberto Alegre

6. And, last of all, a weekly chuckle:

The local sheriff was looking for a deputy, so a blonde went in to try out
> for the job.
>
> "Okay," the sheriff drawled, "What is 1 and 1?"
>
> "Eleven," she replied.
>
> The sheriff thought to himself, "That's not what I meant, but she's right."
> Then the sheriff asked, "What two days of the week start with the letter
> 'T'?".
>
> "Today and tomorrow." replied the blonde.
>
> He was again surprised that the blonde supplied a correct answer that he had
> never thought of himself. "Now, listen carefully, who killed Abraham
> Lincoln?", asked the sheriff.
>
> The blonde looked a little surprised herself, then thought really hard for a
> minute and finally admitted, "I don't know."
>
> The sheriff replied, "Well, why don't you go home and work on that one for a
> while?"
>
> So, the blonde wandered over to the beauty parlor, where her pals were
> waiting to hear the results of the interview. The blonde was exultant. "It
> went great! First day on the job and I'm already working on a murder case!"

4/23/2000

Dear Folks,

We wish each and all of you and your families a blessed Passover and Easter.

1. We've found another way to find lost ones, and vice-versa: Classmates.com

This is a site where you can register yourself and serve as a point of contact for 'lost' classmates that may not know that there is the web site and a means to find others through our website. You don't pay to register. You do pay if you want to be able to obtain e-mail info. for others who have registered.

We have requested to be registered as class reunion 'contacts' and should be able to contact those that do register.

Classmates.com was the means for finding (or being found, as the case may be) two more alums from the class of 75, Ruth Mallett and Rod Don. Their messages are below:

2. Ruth Mallett Dods:

I just received your e-mail and was overjoyed to learn of your Graded website. I am glad to be on the found list. You have me down as last attending Graded in 73, but I actually returned in January 75 and finished my senior year there. I have been married for 21 years and have 4 children: Allison -18, Megan-16, Shannon - 14, and Buddy - 12. I've been homeschooling my kids for the last 10 years and enjoying it tremendously. My husband works for the television industry so we've lived in the Los Angeles area for years.

I will enjoy returning to the site and checking it out.

Wishing you a happy Easter. Ruth Mallett Dods

Ruth's e-mail is deandods@gte.net

3. Roderic Don's

Dennis:

I saw you were just added to this list. I was at Graded from 73-74 (junior year), and I remember you. I'm in close touch with Rob Easter, he lives about an hour away in New Jersey. Anyway, it would be a blast to hear from you.

Rod
don@ccm.udel.edu

4. We now have an e-mail address for Steve Baxter, (shveen@aol.com) thanks to Fred Manteghian.

5. Julie Reddan Salmon's father provided her e-mail address at:

jsalmo1@hallmark.com. Julie lives in Kansas City, MO.

We've added her and Rick Woodford (snail mail address only in Naperville, IL) to the list of the found. We've written to Julie and hope to receive a brief bio and photos soon to add to the bio/photo page.

6. We've added to the class of 75 'lost' list on our web site at http://pweb.netcom.com/~dennis57, the name of the colleges that were listed in the College Choice page of the 1975 yearbook addendum.

Please refer to this list and see if you have access to Alumni association records for these colleges that might enable you to find some of these lost. I've written to some of you separately on this subject, but would appreciate all considering if you can help.

Thanks

Fred Manteghian wrote and provided a virtual means for those who miss the beaches of Brazil to reconnect:

Well, I hope this makes it in time for your weekly update. For everybody
who's so "homesick," here's a LIVE CAMERA view (too small, but that's okay)
of EVERYBODY'S favorite beach, Guaruja.

http://www.centraldotempo.com.br/

I couldn't believe I found this! If you notice, it refreshes ever few
minutes automatically. It even shows the temperature AND the forecast!!!

I'm really kicking myself for not coming down to Florida last winter. The
pictures looked great. I'm back in contact with Steve Baxter...oh, I got
his EMail address, it's:

shveen@aol.com

No idea what that means, but it works :)

Well Take CARE! and thanks!

Fred Manteghian

I actually found another one!

this one is right on the beach.

Take care all, and have a great week,

Dennis and Esther

Dear Friends,

Hope you are all having as wonderful of a Spring as we are here in Florida! The heat waves of the summer have not arrived yet and we are loving every moment of the warm windy weather. This Sunday afternoon found Esther lounging in the hammock on the patio with a copy of The Orchid Thief ( a non-fiction that is set in Florida and reads like fiction for those of you looking for a great read). Dennis set up his computer on a small table on the patio and worked.

Kids news.... not that you asked.. but as indulgent parents we love to brag! Daniel, our oldest was accepted at 6 wonderful schools, U of Florida, Wooster College, Macalaster College, Kenyon, Carlton and Vassar. We sat down and had a family pow wow last Sunday and the decision was made to accept Kenyon's offer. He was awarded a substantial merit scholarship which sweetened the deal!

Thomas is keeping busy , spent yesterday at at beach on Key Biscayne with some friends. Today he took a bike ride. He does occasionaly take time out from his busy social life to study for his upcoming AP European History Exam.

Amaya is trying out this coming week for the Miami Children's Choir. She has a lovely voice but can get a little shy..... so keep your fingers crossed that she doesn't freeze up.

Jacqueline has taken a break from soccer and is instead spending all her free time working on improving her hoop shots for the WBA. She informed us this past weekend that after a discusssion at school where she discovered that several of her classmates speak English at school and Spanish at home that she wants us to speak only Portuguese at home.

Nelson. Ruth thanks. Like Ruth, Evelyn attended Graded only for the second semester of her senior year.

Class of 75 - Lost / Found count

Found 72, Lost 93.

It appears that the class of 75 had much higher turn-over in the high school years than the class of 74. (165 classmates in the class of 75 as compared to 127 for the class of 74).

Can anyone offer a sociological/economic hyphothesis for this significant difference?

People are beginning to respond - from classes of 63-75. Keep in mind, this
is low-key and informal. No big plans; mainly a date and place - and some
loose plans. I don't think we will have trouble making a party happen! So,
please help spread the word. Obrigada, jane

3. Fellowship Church in Sao Paulo, which some (many ?) of you may have attended while at Graded, is holding a reunion in September this year on Captiva Island, off the west coast of Florida. Captiva is between Naples and Fort Myers (closer to Ft. Myers). Julie Reddan Salmon and her younger brother Dan (78) are attending. We are seriously considering attending too. We'd love to have more of our peer group show up. We can have a mini Graded/Fellowship reunion. Write to us if you are interested and we'll send along more information about the Fellowship Reunion.

Take care and have a wonderful week.

Dear Friends,

No, you didn't miss a message from last weekend. We didn't send one. The
last newsletter was dated April 30.

Last weekend was an unusually busy weekend, with Esther's parents visiting
us all the way from Seattle. We'll send another proud-parent update on what
happened the last couple of weeks with us:

Regarding our family news. Everything here is otimo! Sunday evening we
attended an Eagle Scout Recognition Ceremony for Daniel. My parents flew in
from Washington state to participate. My dad ( who is an Eagle Scout ) was
Daniel's speaker. He had a 6 by pass surgery two years ago so I am really
thankful that he is still with us to be able to celebrate this event.

On the Saturday evening we went out to eat at Brazilian Restaurant in town
called Barroco.
Not the same as the Rodizio place we ate at during the class reunion. They
had a little surprise in store for us .......(see picture attachment called
'Incriminating'. . )

Thomas is finishing up his sophomore year. He has an active social life.
When he is home he is in front of the computer icqying about 4 girls and
talking to a 5th on the phone. Its amazing what technology and
multi-tasking have done for this boy!

Amaya is preparing for her end of the year dance recital. She and
Jacqueline also seem to have taken up interior design as a hobby... they
have re-arranged their bedroom several times in the last few weeks. The
beds get shifted from one wall to the next. Jacqueline's current favorite
sport is basketball. She lives outside under the hoop. But the weather is
already getting pretty unbearable and I think that she will soon substitute
swimming for basketball as most prefered sport.

Dennis is keeping busy with more and more work. Good for business. He has
a conference in Dublin at the end of the month and I am going with him.
Will check out The Book of Kells. Those of you who have travelled to
Ireland and would like to share some of your experiences with us, it will be
most appreciated.

I have had a pretty heavy tour schedule with the Art Museum. I got to take
Amaya's class on a tour last week and next week will be taking Thomas'
European History class on a tour. I am pleased to say that both kids WANTED
their old mom to be the tour guide. Its a pretty good feeling that you've
done something right. In the meantime I read the Classifieds every week as
I am invesitigating the idea of going back to work.....

On to the business of keeping up with the news. Two weeks accumulation
makes for a long letter. . .

Dear Friends,

Esther and I are back from Ireland. Below is a photo of us taken during one of the many seasons in one day that we experienced. This was the sunny season. There were the rainy season, the hail-stone season etc etc. The photo was taken at Glendalough, a glacial valley with two lakes and ruins of a monastic site dating back to the 1100's.

We had a blast, especially hiking through the trails along the Wicklow Way in County Wicklow, about 35 miles south of Dublin. It is called the 'Garden of Ireland', with good cause.

CLASS OF 74 NEWS

1. Roberto Alegre wrote the following.

Dear Friends,

I have in the past couple of months met with some old friends from Graded that I had not seen for a long long time !

I was not fortunate to attend the Graded Reunion last year and see all my friends at once.... but...maybe next time.

Gregg was in Brazil visiting his sister and I had lunch with him and Bill, certainly we had a great time.

A few weeks later I received an e-mail from Kim saying that his mother Georgia was in town and I certainly invited her for a good Pizza paulistana the best in the world !. She had the opportunity to meet my family and we had a good talk.

More recently I was in Boston for a business trip, and I was able to schedule dinner together with Steve Baxter, his sister Carol at Fernanda's home. What a great moment !

Um forte abraço a todos

Roberto Alegre

2. Lisle Benson has some photos ready to send us, which we are looking forward to posting. Lisle's note:

"I have NOT forgotten the seventh-grade photo I promised -- it's
still sitting on my dresser -- and I have the truly lovely passport
photo of moi at that age. Am still trying to get from family a fairly
decent pic taken at Christmas of hubby and self that isn't too up-close
and ergo doesn't reveal the multitude of crows'-feet. As they say, at
this point, we should worry about such trivia. I just heard a great one
from someone I know: "Any day above the ground is a good day indeed."
Touche. So have a lot of beer in Erin, look for the wee folk, and watch
out for Irish tenors!!

1. Claudia Smith Tarpy (tarp1@altavista.com) is found. She too is interested in the Fellowship Reunion on Captiva Island in September. We hope to see her there and will post her bio and photo on the web site when it comes in.

2. David Ogilvie wrote and provided his new e-mail address dogilvie@earthlink.net in Naples, FL. His phone number is (941) 592-6691. Do call him and welcome him back to the States.

3. Kathy Michael sent us the new address of her business, which is:

Phone 727-674-0308 Fax 727-674-0315

Kathy has operated owned and operated this Xerox Authorized Sales agent business for about a year now and we wish her every success.

4. We've received and posted a current photo of Greg Downing and his wife Jacqueline. Check out the A - L Class of 75 photos page (http://home.netcom.com/~dennis57/Photos%2075%20A%20-%20L.html). If this link doesn't work let me know and I'll fix the addressing scheme for that page.

Greg offered the following response to my question as to why the class of 75 had much higher turn-over than the class of 74:

>It appears that the class of 75 had much higher turn-over in the high school
>years than the class of 74. (165 classmates in the class of 75 as compared to
>127 for the class of 74).
>
>Can anyone offer a sociological/economic hyphothesis for this significant
>difference?
>

Quick stab: The recession that had been triggered in 73-75 by -- inter alia
-- changes in OPEC policies was ending by 75. A economic "trough" like that
of 73-74 -- which was the biggest recession since the 1950's -- might well
have affected how many Brasilian parents felt they were in a position to
afford Graded, and how many US families were even posted to Brasil in the
first place rather than continuing to work for their company in the US or
not being hired in the first place.

????

Greg is a professor at NYU. For anyone who may have envied those with an academic career as being pressure-free, I'll paste in Greg's description of his end-of-term commitments:

"Well, I have two panel papers to prepare for the London Joyce conference at
the end of next month, plus a forty-minute talk to prepare for the NY Joyce
Society meeting in the Gotham Book Mart on 6/15 that they only asked me
about ten days ago, plus some writing I owe a hypermedia project, plus a
book I am finally finishing -- so I am a little snowed under till after I
get back to the US on 9 July (J and I will be in London starting 22 June).
So it's kind of hectic, but better than not having people interested in the
first place!"

5. Gregg Roth, Leo Dikinis, Rick Conn, Mike Hannahan, Mark Hobbs & Russell Roth (class of '73) met for four days fun at Gregg's summer cottage on Sodus Bay NY. We've attached the photo that Gregg sent us. The Reunion was possible because of the web site. Yessssss. We DON'T have Mark Hobbs' e-mail address. Gregg, could you please provide it? Thanks.

6. Julie Stevens Zergott forwarded to us a piece from Chicken Soup for the Soul that is especially relevant to those of us who are parents. The fragility of life was brought home to us so strongly this past Thursday night when the 16 year old daughter of a fellow Boy Scout leader was hit by a car and killed while in-line skating on a bike path about two miles from our home. The young girl was in our son Thomas' class and was an extraordinary individual. There has been significant coverage in the local media about her (see http://www.herald.com/content/today/news/dade/digdocs/072494.htm).

Thank you Julie for sending us this:

Blessed

A friend and I were standing in line at the grocery store
the other day, and I was telling her how lazy my children were.
I had come in from work that morning, and like most times, my
house was wrecked.
"I believe children nowadays are just out for what they can
get. I bend over backwards for them, and they can't even help
keep our house clean. It wouldn't bother me so, but it's the
woman who looks bad if the house is a mess."
"Do you know how blessed you are?" a woman behind us asked.
"I would love to go home and find my house a mess. I wouldn't
mind my carpet being ruined or the dishes left everywhere. I
wouldn't mind the dirty clothes being piled high or the many
socks to match. I wouldn't even mind anyone talking about my
dirty home. Matter of fact, I would love it. I would dearly
love to kick my way through the house just to get to my kids and
be able to hug them, kiss them and tell them how much I love
them. You see, my two children were killed in an auto accident
and now it's just my husband and me. My house stays clean, my
clothes stay put up, the dishes are done. There are no
fingerprints on my walls, no mysterious spots on my carpets.
There are no sounds of arguing, no slamming doors, no laughter,
no 'I love you Mom.' So you see, you are very blessed. What I
would give to be going through what you are right now. How I
would love to be able to hold my kids, wipe away their tears,
share their dreams. Just to watch them play. If I had my
children, I wouldn't care how my house looked. I would be happy
just to have them."
Now if you come into my house and see a big old mess, you
can think bad thoughts if you want, but I feel greatly blessed.

NEWS FROM OTHER CLASSES

Dick and Barbara Karrer came over for dinner last night. They are the parents of Mary Karrer ('77) and are on the organizing committee for the Fellowship Church Reunion on Captiva Island in September. We obtained from them the current list of confirmed participants for the Reunion, which includes the parents of many of our Class of 74 and 75 classmates. Several of these classmates are joining their parents at the reunion which makes the whole thing even more extra special. These are:

Carla Oden and her sisters Sarah and Maria are attending with their mother Zillah

Julie Reddan Salmon and her brother Dan are attending with their dad Jack

Esther and I are attending.

The following other Class of 74 - 75 parents (at least the last names seem like they are parents) are attending:

Luke and Ann Case (Murray's parents?)
Tam and Bill Harris (John's parents)
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Derr (George, are these your parents?)
Patsy Gay (Steve Gay's Mom)
Inez and Jim Stanton (Tica, your parents I presume?)
Ginny Pyne (Phil's Mom)
Ben and Mary Ogilvie (David's parents)
Maggie and Claude Smith (Claudia, any relation?)
Jim and Valerie Ary (Kathy's parents)
Jane and Gary Shearer (Connie's parents)

Now, if the sons / daughters' of these folks also attend the Captiva Fellowship reunion in September, we'd have quite the little Graded Alum reunion taking place at the same time. How about it folks? You get to visit with Mom and Dad AND your friends at a beautiful location all on the same weekend.

For those for whom the temptation has just become too much, I reproduce at the bottom of this message the invitation to the Reunion.

Take care and have a wonderful week.

Subject: Class of 75 Prodigal Classmate Finds His Way Home To Planet Graded

This week I got a call from Vivian Blem Class of 76 out of the blue, a person I had not talked to in 25 years. The only person I have had any contact with in all these years is the first friend I had at Grade Leila Skolnick now Winick class of 76. Vivian, Leila and I hung out together in the early years of high school and via Leila is how I got this call. Vivian conveyed a domain address to me for Graded and being the computer geek I am I was off and found Virtual Reunion Site of Dennis and Esther. The site just brought back all these memories of a time I had locked behind a door in my mind. I have been looking in at the lives of friends for the past few days like a Starfleet away team does on a society that is pre-warp.

Thanks Dennis and Esther.

What has this prodigal Classmate done for the last 25 years:
Left Brazil to Oregon Fall of 75
Attended Linfield College 75 -76
Attended University of Oregon 76 - 77
Returned Home to New Jersey summer of 77 and did not return to school.
Worked as a factory type, produce stand vendor and soda jerk for the next 3 years.
Got off my ass and returned to College in 1980
Attended East Stroudsburg University Fall (Harvard in the Poconos) of 1980 Computer Science was my new major. I picked that because I saw in the classifieds you could make money doing that. I knew nothing about it. By mid semester I new this was my calling.
Graduated December 1982 Magna Cum Laude. I kick ass when I put my mind into it.
January 1983 started at Bendix AeroSpace Test Systems in Teterboro N.J.
August 1984 left New Jersey for the Golden State, California. I drove across the US to San Diego where I had a new job awaiting at General Dynamics. Can you imagine Harold working for defense contractors. Yes its true.
October 1984 I met my wife Barbara. In 1985 I we started getting fairly serious and started sharing the same roof. Barbara is a great person and I love her very much.
March 1988 we bought our house, my first and her last.
August 1988 we got married at our house. It was great.
I have two stepsons John and Eric. Barbara and I choose not to have children we had enough fun dealing with the two we had. They have cleared the nest and are out on their own.
October 1990 I left GD and started with a commercial high tech startup called HNC Software. I spent the next 8 years of my life building the foundation of HNC Software Success. Company went public on June 21, 1995. What a learning experience.

June 21 1998 my Father died, flew to Brazil for his funeral and brought home his ashes. I believe that I will never return to Sao Paulo. I did see my dad in January of 1997 in Sao Paulo I had not seen him in ten years. I was there on a business trip and spent a week with him. We started communicating via the internet a lot more after that.
November 1998 I co-founded an Analytical Software Company named Stone Analytics Inc. I was the VP/CTO of the company until May of 2000. I am still on the Board of Directors, but have no day to day duties.
I am now working for Stone Investments Inc. the parent company of Stone Analytics. I am the Chief Technical Strategist for SII and work directly for the person that was funding my previous venture. This is a great opportunity for me, because I will get to spend most of my time researching technologies.
That is my life in a nutshell over the past 25 years.

Hobbies:
Computers
Brewing Beer. I have a 1 barrel brewing system. I was thinking of becoming a brewer a few years ago so I got a system that would give me an idea of what it would be like. Decided not to go into the brewing business after doing the research for the time being. My retirement dream is to have a small software shop in a warehouse where in the front we build software and in the back we brew and sell beer.
Cooking, I love to cook.
Travel, I love going to Europe and Hawaii, hope to go to Austraila and the South Pacific.

P.S. I have this party every 4th of July so if any of you would like to attend let me know. Below is enclosed my email invite.
Hello:

The time is approaching once again to celebrate our country's independence. This year the 4th of July celebration will be on a Tuesday. This is the first 4th of the new millennium. We are starting the event a little earlier this year, I think it will be a scorcher so we will see you after 12 noon.

Once again the Gottschalk's are having their Annual party. For those that have come in the past, know it to be a good time and for those new folks who will come for the first time will most likely want to return in years to come.

We provide refreshments, like beer..beer (homebrew only), wine, champagne, soft drinks, hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers. What you need to bring besides yourself and your family is a pot luck dish that will feed a least 8. There are four types of pot luck dishes 1) Appetizer/Salads, 2) Main Dish, 3) Vegetarian Dish and 4) Desert. When you RSVP let us know your choice. Please review "the who is coming page" on our party website. This will allow you to self optimize your choice, it contains statistics on the distribution of potluck dishes.

Please use the RSVP form on the party site to RSVP. Thanks
Party Web site is http://www.softbrew.com/4thparty/default.htm It contains information and directions to the party.

Please RSVP ASAP so we can get a good count. Please provide a count for the # of adults and children. You can change your mind latter, we need to know for planning purposes. I would also like a count on champagne and wine drinkers so let us know who you are. This year on the RSVP you can select an Adult Beverage. If someone in your party prefers a drink other than beer select it.

This years beers are 1) Cask conditioned IPA served via a real English beer engine. 2) Golden Honey Belgian Wheat it is similar to a triple, but made with wheat. 3) Belgian Table Beire a light beer and 4) Blackberry Framboise. We have plenty of home brew for the party, but if someone wants to bring some of their best brew we will have a few taps open.

This years entertainment for both adults and children will be a designated water battle area. Bring your pool gear and towels. In the evening we go on our pilgrimage up to the top of the mountain to watch the local fireworks. It is always an enjoyable event. Don't forget a sweatshirt, flashlights and extra clothes.

Please join us for another 4th of July!!!

PLEASE DO NOT FORGET TO RSVP. Please use the web form to RSVP and not email. TIA

See you on the 4th.

Harold and Barbara
