Rusty
Rubber Head Wallace
The nickname given to Rusty by Dale Ernhardt after flipping down the front stretch at Bristol. This wreck was also called "The Bristol Stomp !" But Rusty would keep on going and win the Winston Cup in 1989, showing graduates from the Midwest short tracks could take the South's biggest prize. Yes even though it was a short time Rusty won the ASA championship before moving to the south and making a name for himself. Rusty was the first person in NASCAR I could really pull for that had raced in this area. Though Mark Martin and Jim Sauter were trying to make it in the early 80's and Dick Trickle showed up for a few races, it was Rusty that had the best shot at carving his name in Winston Cup.
Rusty a fan favorite ? No, in fact Darrell Waltrip owes Rusty a thanks for turning him from villian to fan favorite. It was Rusty putting the bumper to Darrell back in the 88 Winston that really made people start to cheer Darrell and boo Rusty. That's the way of the fan, you almost have to be the bad guy when you beat everyone's old favorites. Look even Jeffy Gordon is getting a lot of boos lately. With the hard luck lately, all the DNFs and upside down twice in one year, people are starting to pull for Rusty now. Maybe if Jeff would spin Rusty out in the Winston he could become the new Fans Favorite.
Though Rusty is a great driver, it the crew that makes the team. When Darrell was with Tim Brewer, the Dale Earnhardt teams in the 80/90s and Jeff Gordon's team today take the drivers to the Cup. Rusty changing from the Blue Max team to Penske was a real set back. Then when Penske got the team up to speed and Rusty was winning 10 races a season, the team was torn apart by big bucks. So with his new team mate Jerry Mayfield, lets see if Rusty can build the team that will let him go back to the top. Just watch out for those Woodchucks.
