Dr. John Robbins Mohler
|
Dr.
John Robbins Mohler was an internationally known scientist who devoted
most of his life to the development and protection of the Nation's
livestock industry. Dr. Mohler retired in 1943 as head of the Agriculture
Department's Bureau of Animal Industries. He gave thebureau 46 years
of service. As administrator, veterinarian and pathologist, he was
known throughout the world for his work in federal meat inspection
and suppression of bovine tuberculosis and cattle tick fever. He is
credited with saving this country's livestock industry by detecting
the existence of foot and mouth disease in some apparently healthy
cattle shipped to the United States. He directed the first campaign
against this scourge in 1902 as well as subsequent outbreaks. Dr.
Mohler was instrumental in bringing about improvement in domestic
animals by genetic research and application of scientific knowledge
to pratical stock breeding. Through his encouragement, the National
Poultry Improvement Plan was established involving breeding and disease
control features. Meat inspection became highly developed under his
supervision. He helped set in motion the rigid system of inspection
that has led consumers to take for granted wholesomeness of United
States inspected meat. The Nation's tremendous production of hogs
is possible largely through his efforts in development of a hog cholera
serum. Dr. Mohler was born in Philadelphia and graduated from Temple
University and the University of Pennsylvania. He obtained a medical
degree from Marquette University and received honorary degrees from
University of Maryland and Iowa State College. In 1897 he began with
the bureau of Animal Industry as an assistant inspector. From 1899
-1901, he served as a assistant pathologist becoming a zoologist in
1901. 1901 - 1902 saw him as chief of the pathology division. In 1914,
he became assistant chief of the bureau. He was promoted to chief
of the bureau in 1917 remaining in this position until 1943. Dr. Mohler
served as president of both the American Veterinary Medical Association
and the United States Livestock Sanitary Association. In 1934 he was
elected president of the 12th International Veterinary Conference.
He was identified with several Government health boards and belonged
to the British Royal Academy of Medicine. In addition to lecturing
at many universities and conferences, he authored and translated many
scientific publications. He authored or co-authored USDA Farmers'
Bulletins 206, 258, 351, 449, 478, 569, 666, 781, 1146, 1355, and
1625, covering the pathology and prevention of a variety of animal
diseases.. |

The Louisville Courier-Journal started the National Spelling Bee with nine contestants in 1925. In 1941, Scripps Howard acquired the rights to the program. There were no Scripps Howard National Spelling Bees during the World War II years of 1943, 1944, and 1945. Co-champions were declared in 1950, 1957, and 1962. Of the 75 national champions, 42 were girls and 33 were boys. The 1935 winner was Clara Mohler.

Shawn Mohler is a National champion trampolinist! He is currently ranked 15th in the world, hoping to improve his ranking at the upcoming world championships in Ogdense Denmark in July of 2001! He is has so far won 1 Gold Medal, 2 Silver medals & 1 bronze medal at the National level. He is one of the fastest up and coming trampolinists in the nation. If he keeps going he will be a true contender to represent the United States in the 2004 Olympics in Athens Greece, not bad considering he has only been in the sport for 3.5 years! Not only is he a top trampolinist, at the age of 18 he became one
of the youngest Lexus salesmen in the United States as well as one
the best in the midwest! At 21, he decided to pursue a different form
of sales - real estate. He then became one of the youngest RE/MAX
agents in the U.S. and in 2000 earned the prestigous 100% club which
only a select group of high producing agents in the Nation will receive
each year! He is a very determined young man, very! Check out Shawn's Website at http://www.shawnmohler.com |
