Why the part number differences? In all truth, I don't know. Logic leans towards minor changes made throughout the production cycle that were deemed "Important Enough" to warrant the number change. This could be a change in castings, or something as simple as an upgrade in valve seats. I suspect part of the change came from the hydraulic-mechanical lifter changes in '87. But again, that's kinda my guess right now..
