| The "Surrealism vs. Santa Fe"
chess set is finally here!! Click on the image to the left to see photos of it. Even
though I have gotten the most interest in my Magritte vs. O'Keeffe chess set over the
years, I could never sell editions of this set due to copyright restrictions (I was
deriving my chess pieces directly from images from the artists' paintings). However
I recently decided, due to the persistence of several collectors, to create a new chess
set inspired by the works of these two great artists. With this new set, I
also decided to return to sculpting and modelling each piece by hand, instead of making
and casting molds. I also paint all 32 pieces and the untraditional chess board
myself with acrylic paint. I then varnish the pieces and the board and line the
pieces with felt underneath to further protect the board. Each set is signed and
numbered by me, the artist. Due to the hand-made nature of the pieces in this set, I can
accomodate custom requests for pieces within reason. The special introductory price for the hand-made, limited edition "Surrealism vs. Santa Fe" chess set is $750.00 US retail. |

Click on the image to the left to see three photos of the "Monet vs. Degas" chess set! These chess pieces are originally sculpted by me the artist, Susan Shankwitz, and then hand-cast from my own molds. The pieces are cast with a mixture of marble powder, urethane resin (for strength and durability) and barite poweder (for weight). I then paint all 32 pieces and the untraditional chess board with acrylic paint. Finally I varnish the pieces and the board and line the pieces with felt underneath to further protect the board. Only 250 of these Monet vs. Degas chess sets will ever be made. Each set is signed and numbered by me, the artist. The retail price for the hand-made, limited edition "Monet vs. Degas" chess set is $1000.00 US. |
